Purpose: The power of Motivity’s program builder enables clinicians to configure programs uniquely compared to other systems. This configurability brings a learning curve. Utilizing the Basic Mode of the Target Interface and the Mastery sections of the program builder can help reduce the learning curve.
Basic Mode: The program builder includes a “Basic Mode” across different sections. Basic Mode provides options representing the most commonly used configurations for behavior change programs. It hides unnecessary features you may not need to see. You can switch to Advanced Mode when you require a program to perform something more complex (e.g. advanced transition rules in a baseline phase).

Differences between Basic and Advanced Mode
Target Interface
The Basic Mode for Target Interface and has fewer options than the Advanced Mode. For Basic Mode, all you need to input is the
- Key Instruction (e.g. SD or MO or short instruction that appears above the data collection instrument),
- Measure Label (this is the behavior or skill definition),
- Instrument (pass-fail, count, duration, integer, text, prompts).

Basic Mode configurations change based on the instrument you select, which gives you options to set a success threshold, add prompt hierarchies, and such.
Basic Mode for the Target Interface does NOT work for
- Targets with multiple instruments
- Task Analysis targets
- Targets with an instrument and a text box for notes
The above options are only available in Advanced Mode. Learn more about using Advanced Mode here.
Mastery
The Basic Mode for Mastery Criteria offers fewer options than Advanced Mode but is easier to use. The mastery criteria for Basic Mode solely address targets mastery criteria set as a percentage of successful sessions, transitioning to completion or the next phase in the list. Additionally, it can be utilized for the percentage of correct intervals for interval recording.
In Summary
Consider using the Basic Target Interface when:
- You are only using one measurement instrument to track data.
Consider using the Basic Mastery Mode when:
- You are using automated transitions (not manual transitions).
- The transition only needs to move forward to the next phase.
Checklist to Switching Basic Mode for Target Interface
Video Walk Through: Motivity Basic Mode Video
- Choose templates in your library that are good candidates for Basic Mode (templates used to create programs, templates that new BCBAs use a lot, ect.)
- Click Edit and “Tap to Edit” blue bar at the top of the editor
- Start in the first phase, check your target interface to see if your current settings can be replicated in Basic Mode (e.g., is there only one instrument?)
- Copy the text from the Key Instruction box in Advanced and paste it in the Basic Mode section.
- Go back into Advanced and identify the instrument and Measure Label. Copy the label.
- Go into Basic, select the appropriate instrument, and paste the measure label.
Checklist to Switching Basic Mode for Mastery
- Start in the first phase, check your current Mastery configurations to see if they can be replicated in Basic Mode (e.g. there aren’t any complex transitions or session outcomes)
- Match the current configurations in Advanced Mode in Session Outcome and Transitions to the simplified sentence structure in Basic Mode
- Transition when __% of at least __ trials are correct for __ sessions in a row.
