Saving a Phase Progression as a Global Parameter

In applied behavior analysis, utilizing phase progressions is crucial for accurately monitoring client progress and adjusting interventions. One powerful feature of the Motivity system is the ability to save a phase progression as a global parameter. This article will guide you through the process.

What is a Phase Progression?

A phase progression outlines the various stages of an intervention or treatment plan. Each phase may have specific goals, strategies, and measurement criteria. Tracking these phases effectively allows practitioners to evaluate a client's growth and make data-driven decisions. Here are some examples of phase progressions in Motivity:

Why Save as a Global Parameter?

Saving a phase progression as a global parameter offers several advantages:

  1. Consistency Across Programs and Learners: By saving a phase progression globally, you ensure that all learners are working with the same criteria and measurements, enhancing data reliability.

  2. Efficiency: Once a phase progression is saved, you can quickly apply it to new (or existing!) programs needing to recreate it from scratch. This saves time and reduces the risk of errors.

How to Save a Phase Progression as a Global Parameter

Step 1: Create Your Phase Progression

  1. Define each phase: Enter the details for each phase, including measurement criteria, instructions, criteria for session outcome and transitions.

Step 1: Save as a Global Parameter

  1. Link Icon: Once your phase progression is complete, look for the link icon next to the word "Phases"

  2. Select "Link to" -- "Link to Global" -- "New parameter" -- then you can name your parameter/phase progression.

  3. Unlink: Your phase progression has now been saved as a global parameter, and is now "linked". Select "Options" and then "Unlink"

Warning: Leaving a phase progression global parameter linked is not recommended, because editing a global parameter affects all programs that are linked to that global parameter.

Step 3: Apply the Global Parameter to Another Program

  1. Open the program to which you would like to apply the phase progression. Navigate to the  "Phases" section and select the link icon next to it. Then, select "Link to..."

  2. Select Your Saved Phase Progression: Select "Link to Global" and then choose the previously saved phase progression from the list.

  3. You will get the warning "Linking to __ will overwrite any changes made. Do you want to continue" - the system is warning you that linking the phase progression will overwrite all existing phases within the target, including instruments, SDs, transition criteria, etc.

  4. If you're sure, select "Link Anyway"
  5. Finally, unlink the parameter.

  6. Customize as Needed: If necessary, make any adjustments specific to the new client or program context before clicking "Update."

Tips for Effective Use

  • Regularly Review Parameters: Periodically review and update your global parameters to reflect any changes in best practices or client needs.
  • Permissions: You can give permission to edit Global Parameters in Roles. It is recommended to limit permission to only Owners and more highly trained roles such as clinical directors.

  • Train Your Team: Ensure that all team members who have access to global parameters understand how to access and utilize them.
