Setting Up a Program Utilizing A Changing Criterion Design

In Motivity, you can set up a program to transition between phases based on a set criterion, which can be a frequency/count, or a duration.

To get a jump start on building a program like this, you can utilize our changing criterion template from the Motivity Community Library. With this template, you can choose from configurations for increasing duration, decreasing duration, increasing frequency, and decreasing frequency:

You can copy this template to your own library or learner to begin customizing it.

While copying it, you can rename the program. You can also choose to rename it later on:

Once copied, you can delete the sets that do not apply to your program. Since this is an increasing duration program, I will delete all other sets:

The template comes with default criteria for each type of measurement:

Let's say we want to change the first phase to one minute instead of five. We will open up that phase and make the following changes:

  • Rename the phase
  • Change the opportunity outcome to the corresponding duration in seconds. For 1 minute, I have entered 60 seconds. Note: For count programs, you will simply enter the desired frequency or count.

This template is set up to transition from each phase to the next after 2 successful sessions. If your criteria are different (for example, if you require 3 or 5 sessions to transition the target), you can easily change that by following these directions:

  • Scroll to mastery
  • Click the lock next to "Transitions" - since this section of the program is linked to a local parameter, you will only have to make this change in one phase.
  • Change the number of successful sessions required to trigger an automatic transition.
  • Optionally, you can select to require successful sessions across N people.
  • Once you have set up your transition rules, click the lock again to close it.

If necessary, you will open each phase to customize the name of the phase, as well as the opportunity outcome in seconds.

You can follow the steps above for any type of changing criterion program! If you have questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your CSC.

Finally, remember to utilize the simulation to ensure your program is functioning as expected, and then click "Update" on your program:
