Trial Count Adherence Metrics
Trial Count Adherence metrics give clinicians and supervisors a detailed view of whether data collectors are meeting the minimum recommended number of teaching trials for each goal during a session.
Overview
Trial Count Adherence metrics give clinicians and supervisors a detailed view of whether data collectors are meeting the minimum recommended number of teaching trials for each goal during a session.
Trial Count Adherence is part of Motivity's prescribed metrics family and is calculated for prescribed targets only. Think of it as a more detailed lens on your session data — where prescribed trials tell you the total number of trials expected across a session, Trial Count Adherence extends that by breaking things down further, showing how each individual target and program measured up against their minimum trial requirements.
What Is Trial Count?
Trial count refers to the minimum number of trials that should be run for a target in a session. The minimum is determined as follows:
- If a target has a manual suggested dosage setting, that value is used
- If there is no manual suggested dosage, the minimum is based on session success criteria rules
- If a target has neither a suggested dosage nor session success criteria rules, the minimum defaults to 1
Trial Count Adherence Metrics
Each session includes three levels of trial count adherence metrics, all of which update in real time.
Target Trial Count Adherence
This metric reflects how well an individual target met its trial count requirement during the session. Each target is classified at the phase level as one of the following:
| Classification | Definition |
|---|---|
| Met | Trials run were greater than or equal to the minimum trial count |
| Partially Met | Trials run were greater than or equal to 1, but less than the minimum trial count |
| Skipped |
Trials run equal zero Note: A target will not be classified as "Skipped" until the session has ended. |
|
Not Applicable (displayed as - - -) |
The target is non-prescribed and is not included in trial count calculations |
Not Applicable applies to:
- Targets marked as optional
- Targets added mid-session
- Data from phases introduced mid-session
Where to find it: Met, Partially Met, and Not Applicable classifications are assigned to targets that were run during the session and can be found in the raw session data. Targets classified as Skipped appear in a dedicated section of the raw data for skipped targets.
Program Trial Count Adherence
This metric shows the percentage of prescribed targets within a program that met their trial count requirement.
- Calculated by: (Prescribed Targets in Program That Met Trial Count ÷ Total Prescribed Targets in Program) × 100
- Where to find it: Displayed just below the program name in the raw session data, in both the run and skipped targets sections. The display includes both the number of targets that met trial count and the total number of prescribed targets in the program.
Example: A program has 4 targets: 1 was skipped, 1 was partially met, 1 was met, and 1 was non-prescribed.
| Targets | Count |
|---|---|
| Met | 1 |
| Partially Met | 1 |
| Skipped | 1 |
| Non-Prescribed | 1 |
| Prescribed Targets Total | 3 |
| Program Trial Count Adherence | 33% (1 ÷ 3) |
Average Program Trial Count Adherence
This metric provides a single, session-level score representing the average trial count adherence across all prescribed programs in the session.
- Calculated by: Sum of all Program Trial Count Adherence percentages ÷ Number of Prescribed Programs
- Where to find it: Located in the session metrics section, under the heading "Treatment Integrity"
Example: A learner's session includes 3 programs with the following scores:
| Program | Trial Count Adherence |
|---|---|
| Program 1 | 33% |
| Program 2 | 50% |
| Program 3 | 100% |
| Average Program Trial Count Adherence | 61% |
Important Notes
- Prescribed targets only — Trial Count Adherence is calculated for prescribed targets only; optional and mid-session targets are classified as Not Applicable and excluded from calculations
- Real-time updates — All three metrics update as data are collected during the session
- Skipped classification timing — A target is not classified as Skipped until the session has ended; this ensures the system does not prematurely flag targets that may still be run
