Enhancements to Session Data Visualization, Metrics, and Program Configuration

This article covers four new features released to improve session data visibility, target configuration, and performance metrics. You'll learn how to use the trial progress visualization, configure target intent settings, understand the updated suggested

Why these Updated Matters:

These improvements give clinicians and data collectors better visibility into what's happening in a session in real time, and provide BCBAs with objective, data-driven metrics for supervision and reporting. Together, they help ensure that the data the system collects accurately reflects clinical intent — reducing ambiguity and improving the quality of ABA service delivery.

Some funders also require documented evidence of program density (e.g., programs run per hour), making these metrics valuable beyond internal use.

Feature 1 — Trial progress visualization

Gray mini-squares representing suggested trials now appear on program and target cards before any data is collected, giving data collectors immediate context at the start of a session. This visualization is available across all three views in data collection.

How to turn off the mini-squares (default: on)

  1. While in Data Collection, navigate to the relevant view.

  2. Select the View option within the data collection interface.

  3. Toggle the setting to turn off the trial progress mini-squares.

Feature 2 & 3— "Expected to be run" target setting New

Clinicians can now specify whether a target should always be run when it appears in data collection, or only occasionally — for example, during naturalistic or generalization activities. This distinction is important for ensuring that future metrics and skipped-target indicators are accurate.

How to configure this setting

  1. Navigate to the Program Builder for the relevant program.

  2. Open Phase Settings for the phase that contains the target(s) you want to configure.

  3. Locate the "Expected to be run" option and select the appropriate setting:

    • Every time it appears in data collection — use this for required targets such as discrete trial training (this is the default).

    • Occasionally (naturalistic/optional) — use this for targets that are probed opportunistically, such as generalization checks or maintenance targets.

Feature 4 & 5 — "Deeper Insights"

The new and reorganized session metrics provide immediate, actionable insights into the work completed during a session — for example, the number of programs, targets, and trials run per hour. This makes it easier to quickly understand session intensity and monitor productivity at a glance.

Opening Session Metrics

  1. Navigate to the learner's Timeline or Reports.

  2. Find the desired completed session.

  3. Select View Metrics.

  4. Select View All Metrics to see the complete set of session metrics.

Customer Adoption: These enhancements improve the clinical value of the platform by providing more accurate session metrics and greater flexibility in configuring targets. As a result, clinicians gain clearer insights into learner progress while reducing the effort required to interpret session data.

Internal Effectiveness: The new Expected to be Run setting lays the foundation for more accurate clinical KPIs by enabling the platform to distinguish between required, optional, and skipped targets. This improves data integrity today and supports more reliable reporting and analytics in the future.

Concepts & Key Details

This release introduces new ways to visualize trial progress, configure target expectations, calculate suggested dosage, and review session metrics, leading to more accurate data collection and deeper clinical insights.

  1. Trial Progress Always Visible (Feature 1): Suggested trials are now displayed before any data is collected, making expected progress visible from the start of a session. The gray trial indicators are available across all three data collection views.

  2. Target Intent Setting (Feature 2): Clinicians can now specify whether a target should be run Every time it appears (required) or Occasionally (naturalistic/optional), providing greater flexibility while improving the accuracy of future reporting and analytics.

  3. Suggested Trial Calculation Logic (Feature 3): For programs using multiple session outcome rules, suggested trials are now calculated using the largest minimum value across all applicable rules instead of the smallest. This ensures suggested trial counts better reflect the program's requirements.

  4. New Session Metrics (Features 4 & 5): A new Session Metrics experience provides detailed insights into session activity, including the number of programs, targets, and trials run, as well as productivity metrics such as trials per hour. Summary metrics are available on the Session Overview, with a dedicated Session Metrics view offering the complete set of available metrics.
